For the uninitiated, shape note or Sacred Harp music is an early American folk singing tradition. Designed for beginners, this participatory singing practice is a great way to get in touch with your unique voice and learn to harmonize with others. We’ll sing from an 1800s tune book that was revised last year to include 100+ new hymns - most by living composers! These songs are religious in nature but you needn’t be to join in. The texts are timeless meditations on daily living, existential angst, present joys, and earthly mortality - relatable themes for any human toiling away in the senselessness we’re calling 2026.
Free and open to all! Come by Heirloom to check it out next week or in the weeks to follow. You may love it; you may be completely repelled. Either way, you’re guaranteed a sonic experience like no other.
