Join us for a hands-on exploration of the Cherokee double-walled basket, a traditional form known for its durability, balance, and striking visual appeal. While rooted in Indigenous craftsmanship, this class is taught by a non-Indigenous instructor who brings deep respect for the origins of the technique and a passion for teaching others the practical and artistic value of basketry.
You’ll learn to weave using commercially available reed — a great material for beginners — but will also gain insights into how these same techniques can be adapted using native plants like grasses and vines. This approach honors the tradition while equipping you with skills you can use beyond the classroom, with materials you gather yourself. What makes basket weaving so powerful is its versatility. It is a functional craft, rich in cultural history, and a canvas for personal expression.
Whether you’ve never woven before or are looking to deepen your skills, this class offers a thoughtful, creative, and grounding experience. All materials are provided, but food and drinks may be purchased on site at your own cost. You’ll leave with a finished double-walled basket and the knowledge to weave using both modern and natural materials.
